Three different products share one name
“AI SEO tool” is doing a lot of work as a phrase. Ask three buyers what they want and you get three unrelated answers: one wants to know whether ChatGPT names their company, one wants a brief that produces a page worth citing, and one wants to stop paying for four subscriptions. Those are different products with different unit economics, and comparing them on price alone produces nonsense — a $29 tracker and a $549 platform are not competing for the same money.
So this comparison sorts the market into the three jobs first, then prices each one.
- AI visibility trackers run a list of prompts against the answer engines on a schedule and report whether you were mentioned, who was cited instead, and how that moved. They measure. They do not fix. Priced per prompt, per engine, per day.
- Content tools research a topic, grade a draft against what already ranks, and increasingly track a handful of prompts alongside it. They fix. Priced per document or per audited page.
- All-in-one suites carry keyword research, rank tracking, site audits and backlinks, with AI visibility bolted alongside. Priced per project and per seat.
A fourth job exists and almost nothing serves it: proving why a published claim was allowed to go out. That is a regulated-industry problem, and it is the one we build for. It is covered in its own section below, and in a separate post for FCA, SEC, FINRA and ASA-regulated firms.
The nine tools, side by side
Every figure below came from the vendor’s own pricing page, not from a review site, on 7 September 2026. Where a vendor does not publish a number as readable text, the cell says so instead of borrowing someone else’s guess.

Best AI visibility tracker
Otterly.ai — the cheapest honest starting point
$29 a month buys 15 prompts, refreshed daily across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, with unlimited team members on every tier. That last detail matters more than it sounds: most rivals meter seats, so the cheap plan is cheap because only one person can look at it.
The catch is engine add-ons. Claude, Gemini and Google AI Mode are paid add-ons on top of the plan, from $9 a month on Lite to $439 a month for Claude on Premium, so the real bill depends on which engines matter to you. Work out which engines your buyers actually use before you compare the sticker price with anyone else’s.
Profound — the deepest, if the budget is there
A dedicated answer-engine visibility platform: runs your prompts across AI engines daily, reports mentions, citations and competitors, and tracks AI crawler traffic to your domain. The deepest engine coverage on this list — Enterprise reaches up to nine answer engines — plus agent analytics that show which AI crawlers reach your pages through Cloudflare, Fastly, Akamai, Vercel and others.
Two honest warnings. First, the Starter plan tracks ChatGPT only, with no exports and one seat, so the tier most solo operators can afford is the tier that answers the least. Second, the pricing page renders its figures as an animated counter rather than text, so this post does not quote a number for it. Third-party reviews do quote figures; we are not going to repeat a price we could not read at the source.
Best for writing and optimising the pages
Frase — measurement and production on one bill
Frase’s entry plan is $39per month, billed yearly ($49 month to month), and it includes AI visibility on ChatGPT and Google AI plus 50 prompts, 10 articles, 50 audit pages. It is the cheapest tool on this list that both tells you where you stand and produces the page that changes it.
The tier ladder is really an engine ladder: perplexity arrives on Professional and Claude and Gemini on Scale, so engine coverage is the thing you are really buying as you move up the tiers.
Clearscope — for teams whose bottleneck is editing, not drafting
$129 a month for 50 tracked prompts, 50 pages, and unlimited users and unlimited projects on every plan, so an editor, a writer and a freelancer cost the same as one person. If your problem is that good writers need a reliable signal rather than another generator, this is the shape that fits.
Surfer — one screen for the page and the prompt
The optimisation guidance and the AI visibility data sit in one tool, so the page you are editing and the prompt you are trying to win are on the same screen. The trap is the entry tier: the $49 Discovery plan tracks zero AI prompts. Prompt tracking starts on Standard at $99 a month and covers ChatGPT only, refreshed weekly; all five engines with a daily refresh start on Pro at $182 a month. Budget for Pro if AI visibility is the reason you are buying.
Best all-in-one suite
Semrush at $139 a month is the broadest product in this category and the easiest to justify for agency work, where the reporting is half the job. A published daily prompt allowance starts on Starter at $199 a month with 50 prompts, and seats are an add-on from $45 a month each, so the sticker price is rarely the final bill.
SE Ranking is $129per month, billed monthly ($103.20 billed annually) and does the same job for less, putting AI visibility next to the rankings it is meant to explain. The cheaper legacy tiers are gone, so $129 a month is now the floor, and the AI depth does not reach a dedicated tracker.
Ahrefs is the odd one out. The $29 a month Starter plan is the cheapest entry price on this page, but tracking your own custom prompts is a separate package, priced from $50 a month on top of the plan, so AI visibility is an add-on rather than an included feature. Buy it for research depth — brand Radar can be pointed at any brand, not only your own verified projects, which makes competitive AI research possible rather than inferred. — rather than as a visibility tracker.
Best for regulated firms
If you are a financial adviser, a broker, a clinic or anyone else whose marketing copy is governed by a rulebook, every tool above shares one gap: they will help you publish faster and none of them will tell you whether the sentence you just published was allowed.
That is what Edition House is for, and this is our product, so read the limits first. Citation checks run monthly rather than daily. Compliance scanning starts on Growth at £199 a month, not on the £15 entry plan. If daily prompt tracking across nine engines is the job you are hiring for, Profound does it better and we will say so.
What we do that the others do not: every factual claim in a generated draft is checked against evidence before it can be published, and the copy is reviewed against the regulators’ own published handbooks rather than a generic style guide. The decision is recorded, so months later you can show why a promotion was approved. For a firm that has to answer for its marketing, that record is the product.

If daily prompt tracking across nine engines is the job, a dedicated tracker does it better. |

What the evidence actually says
Two findings should shape what you buy. The first is that AI answers really do take the click, so the visibility question is not academic.
8% vs 15%
Google users clicked a traditional search result on 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared, against 15% of visits where none did.
Pew Research Center, July 2025 · Browsing data from 900 US adults, 68,879 Google searches during March 2025
What it does not prove: US adults only, and Google only — the study could not identify AI summaries on other search engines.
The second is that being cited is not the same as ranking. Semrush’s own study found that pages cited by ChatGPT search usually were not ranking anywhere near the top of Google for the related query.
almost 90%
When ChatGPT search cited a page, that page ranked at position 21 or worse in traditional organic search for related queries almost 90% of the time.
Semrush, July 2025 · Over 500 digital marketing and SEO topics, translated into search terms and prompts
What it does not prove: Same vendor and same topic scope as the figure above.
Read together, those two say something useful about spending: a tool that only reports your Google position is measuring the wrong surface, and a page that cannot crack the top ten can still be the page an assistant quotes. That is the argument for buying visibility data separately from rank data — and the argument against assuming your existing rank tracker already covers it.
One more, because it changes what you should write rather than what you should buy: length and phrasing decide whether an AI answer appears at all.
8% vs 53%
Searches of one or two words produced an AI summary 8% of the time; searches of ten words or more produced one 53% of the time.
Pew Research Center, July 2025 · Browsing data from 900 US adults, 68,879 Google searches during March 2025
Short queries mostly still return links. The long, conversational, full-sentence questions — the ones a buyer asks when they are close to a decision — are the ones that trigger an answer. That is where a comparison page, a pricing page or a straight “best X for Y” page earns its place, and it is why this post is written the way it is.
How to choose, in four questions
- Can you act on the answer this quarter? If nobody has time to change a page, a tracker will produce a chart nobody uses. Buy the content tool first.
- Which engines do your buyers use? Engine coverage is what you are really paying for. ChatGPT-only tiers are common at the bottom of every price list, and they answer a quarter of the question.
- How many prompts do you genuinely need? Fifteen well-chosen buying prompts beat two hundred vague ones, and the difference between those two allowances is several hundred pounds a month.
- Who has to sign off what you publish? If the answer is a compliance officer, a legal team or a regulator, the tool has to produce a record, not just a draft.
How this comparison was put together
Nine tools, chosen because they appear repeatedly in buying conversations about AI search and because each publishes enough detail to compare honestly. Every price, plan name, engine list and allowance was read from the vendor’s own pricing page on 7 September 2026and is stored in one shared dataset, so the tables in this post and the two related posts cannot disagree with each other.
Three rules constrain what appears above. A figure the vendor does not publish as text is recorded as unpublished rather than filled in from a review site. Every tool gets a stated limitation, including ours. There are no affiliate links on this site, so nothing in the ordering is paid for.
What this comparison is not: a performance test. Nobody can honestly claim to have measured which tool produces more AI citations, because the outcome depends on the site, the sector and several months of publishing. Treat every “we tested 40 tools” headline, including the ones that outrank this page, with that in mind.
Questions people ask
- What is the best AI SEO tool in 2026?
- There is no single best tool, because the phrase covers three different products. For tracking whether AI assistants mention your brand, Otterly.ai is the cheapest credible option at $29 a month and Profound is the deepest. For writing and optimising the pages themselves, Frase starts at $39 a month billed yearly and Clearscope at $129. For one platform covering classic SEO as well, Semrush is the broadest at $139 a month and SE Ranking the better value at $129. Decide which of the three jobs you are buying before you compare prices.
- What is the cheapest AI SEO tool that is actually useful?
- Otterly.ai at $29 a month tracks 15 prompts daily across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, with unlimited team members. Ahrefs Starter is $29 a month but tracking your own prompts is a separate package from $50 a month on top. Frase at $39 a month billed yearly includes AI visibility on ChatGPT and Google AI plus ten articles and fifty audit pages, which makes it the cheapest tool that both measures and fixes.
- Is an AI visibility tracker worth paying for?
- It is worth paying for once you have something to change. A tracker tells you which prompts mention you and which cite a competitor; it does not write the page that fixes it. If you cannot act on the answer this quarter, spend the money on the content instead and buy the tracker when there is a decision waiting on it.
- Do AI SEO tools work for local businesses?
- Partly. Every tool on this list can track prompts that include a place name, which is the main thing a local business needs to know. None of them manage the Google Business Profile, review responses and directory listings that AI assistants lean on heavily for local recommendations, so a local business usually needs a tracker plus a separate local presence routine.
- Can I just use ChatGPT to do AI SEO?
- You can use it to write and to diagnose, and many people do. What a general assistant cannot do is measure: it has no record of whether you were mentioned last week, no comparison against competitors, and no way to tell you that a change moved anything. Pair a general model for the work with one tool that keeps the measurements.
- How often do these prices change?
- Often enough that any comparison older than a quarter is unreliable. SE Ranking retired its cheaper tiers in late 2025 and Semrush renamed its plan line-up. Every figure in this post was read from the vendor’s own pricing page on 7 September 2026 and is dated on the page for that reason.
